Parkside Purpose Statement

The staff at Parkside School will endeavor to support and assist students in developing their individual, social, emotional, and academic needs with the intent of developing well-adjusted, responsible, and independent individuals.

Parkside Community

The Parkside community consists of parents, students, siblings, school board staff, school staff, and volunteers.

Essential Skills

It is our hope and intention that as students progress through their years at Parkside School they will develop skills in the following areas:

Become independent, life-long learners.
Develop an understanding that learning can be fun.
Become confident in their learning.
Develop good work habits.
Develop a sense of belonging.
Develop academic skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and technology.
Develop social skills in sharing, problem-solving, acceptance of responsibility, positive decision making, acceptance of others, and understanding of citizenship.

We Believe

We strongly believe that healthy emotional, social and academic development of children can only occur when the significant adults in their lives are working cooperatively in an attempt to support such development. Children need demonstrations that commitment to responsibilities and appreciation of the rights of others are important skills for everyday interactions. Through our discussions and actions, at home and school, children will learn the importance of their own rights and responsibilities and the important role they play in accepting the rights and responsibilities of others in their lives.

We also believe that all members of the Parkside community have a right to exist within a safe environment and that all forms of bullying, harassment, discrimination and assault are unacceptable. Such behaviors will be addressed immediately and appropriate consequences issued.

School Rules

School rules are created as a means to ensure that the school environment is a safe place to grow, learn and play. Remember, we are trying to keep a safe environment for over 300 individuals on a daily basis, so it is very important that the expectations are set for everyone to follow. We do hope that, through full cooperation, everyone within the Parkside Community will be able to learn and play and have fun!

Play fighting, physical/verbal harassment and all other aggressive behavior will not be tolerated.

Rocks, snowballs, sticks, and dirt are not to be thrown on the school grounds. Other students could get hurt!

Policy

All materials, including clothing, which are discriminatory or offensive will not be permitted.
Be punctual.
Rollerblades, skateboards, wheelies, are not to be used on school property.
Students are required to remain on school grounds and in designated areas during the school day. Parents must send in a note if they permit their child to leave the school property during the day.
Contact through a note or a phone call must be made to the school if your child will be absent for the day.
Parents and visitors are required to check in at the office when entering the school.
Smoking on school grounds is strictly prohibited. This is a Western School Board policy and is in effect for all individuals who use school facilities.
Chewing gum and wearing hats (in school) will only be permitted on specially arranged activity days.
Bicycles must be placed in the bike racks as soon as students arrive on the school grounds.

Behavior

All movement in the hallways will be completed in a safe, quiet, and orderly manner.
Be responsible during independent times (in and out of class).
Be responsible for school books and school property.
Cooperate with teachers and classmates.
Always enter and exit the building in a safe and orderly manner.
Use all playground equipment in a safe way.

Attitude

Always try your best.
All members of the Parkside Community will be treated and addressed in a respectful manner.
Kind words and actions make us all happier!
All play is to be safe and fair.
Remember, Peer Mediators are on the playground and can help if you are involved in a conflict.
At the beginning of each school year, teachers hold class meetings with their students to establish a standard of acceptable behavior in the classroom. These expectations are established and agreed upon by all members of the class and shared with parents during the Parent Information Night held in September.

Accountability

Staff at Parkside School will always attempt to work in a proactive manner when dealing with unacceptable student behavior. Parent support and communication in this process is essential in order to help children understand school rules.
Proactive Behavior Management Strategies:
Teacher/Student Conferences: If a teacher and a student are experiencing difficulty, they are required to address the issue and to try to cooperatively find solutions to solve the conflict.
Parent/Teacher Conferences: Teachers and parents must always maintain strong communication with one another. Teachers will contact parents to receive suggestions, strategies, and support in helping a student make positive choices.
Time In Room: When students have made poor choices we provide them with a time in at lunch. A Yellow slip with an explanation of the poor choice will be sent home to be signed by parents. If the yellow slip is not returned, teachers will be contacting parents. Academic work will be assigned for further offenses. After 5 time-ins the student will stay for an after-school time in and parents will be notified of a date and time.
Teacher meets with Student Support Team: A Student Support Team is established in the school to help support teachers in identifying further strategies to utilize with a student.
Case Conferences: The school will arrange to meet with parents, teachers, administrators and other support people to discuss areas of concern and support in helping a student meet with greater success.
When the above strategies have not resulted in a positive change, discipline for the continuation of unacceptable behavior will be:
Student Contract: On occasion, students will be placed on a school behavior contract. This outlines the behaviors we hope the student will demonstrate in school and on the playground.
When students are unable to follow the guidelines in the contract, the students will be placed on in-school detention or out-of-school suspension.
Out-of-school Suspension: Students on an out-of-school suspension are not allowed to be on school grounds between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm on the day of their suspension, or to participate in any school-sponsored activities.
In most situations many, if not all, proactive strategies are tried in an attempt to assist a student in making the necessary behavior changes. If a student continues to make choices that are in contradiction to the school Codes of Conduct, the student will be placed on a behavior contract. We continually work with students, in a proactive manner, when on a contract, however, if they continue to break conditions of the Codes of Conduct they are placed on an in-school detention. The first violation of school rules will result in a one day suspension where parents will be notified to pick up their child. The second offense will be a two day suspension and parents will have to attend a re-entry meeting.
In all cases of violence, the school administrator may move directly to an out-of-school suspension. The seriousness of the violent incident and past behavior of the student will be factors evaluated in making this decision.
It must be remembered that we interact with each student understanding their individual personalities and circumstances. Dealing with unacceptable behavior does not follow the same steps for all students.
It must be understood that behaviors that interfere with the safety of self or others will be dealt with immediately and seriously. In such cases, students will be removed from the situation and given time out either within or outside of the school.
Members of the Parkside Community believe in the importance of quality education for its students, which includes; a positive and safe learning environment.
